Don’t Lose Your Balance

I find that losing your balance is easy to do, especially when it comes to work-life balance. Although, you should be trying to make this one of the easiest things to balance… When you think about it, anything could happen tomorrow, so maybe enjoying the life you’ve earned should be more important than having a penny made put in your bank account.

I’ll be the first to admit that I used to put every penny in savings and didn’t spend more than my standard living expenses. I recently realized that I need to enjoy life and everything that I’ve earned. If my family wants to take a vacation, I need to make that happen; if my wife wants to go on a date to a nice restaurant, then I need to go for it.

I wanted to share a few ways that I learned to find work-life balance:

  1. Let go of fear – If you stop working after hours, realize that it’s normal and your company won’t crumble and vanish. You’ll easily be able to tell if you’re doing a good job at work. There is no reason to stress or be in fear of losing your job if you don’t respond to every email immediately.
  1. Schedule regular fun activities – Find something that you love to do, and make time for it weekly or monthly. For instance, my wife and I are huge soccer fans, so we bought season tickets to FC Cincinnati. It’s a fun event for us that is once a week, and allows us to put our phones down and to have fun.
  1. Turn off your phone – This is something that I’m TERRIBLE at doing. We recently made a rule at our house that phones must be put in out lock box in the laundry room before we go into the bedroom for the night.

There are many more ways to create work-life balance, but I wanted to share from my own experiences. I’ll be sure to write again with an update on how the phone lockbox is going, as it will be interesting, to say the least. I’d suggest you start small – pick one way to improve your work-life balance and commit to it for a couple of weeks.
